Vespa
Vespa Scooters are Italian scooters known for their pressed steel unibody construction, which covers the engine, provides a floor board and a cowl at the front for wind protection. Vespa is one of seven companies owned by Piaggio, which is Europe's largest manufacturer of two-wheeled vehicles.
The Vespa brand was created after WWII by Enrico Piaggio. His father, Rinaldo Piaggio, founded the Piaggio company as an aircraft manufacturer. After the war, the Italian aircraft industry was severely curtailed as part of an armistice agreement. In light of this and the poor state of Italian roads after continued allied bombing raids, Enrico Piaggio wanted to produce a cheap and reliable means of transportation for the Italian people. Thusly the Vespa Scooter was born.

Honda
Honda Motorcycles, which also produces Honda brand scooters, has been in operation since 1955. At its peak in 1982, Honda Motorcycles was producing 3 million motorcycles annually. The Honda Super Cub is historically considered Honda's first scooter, however as the rider actually straddles the engine, the Super Cub is closer in design to a small displacement motorcycle or a moped.

Lambretta
Lambretta scooters were first manufactured by Innocenti, a one-time steel tubing manufacturer that converted to scooter production following the devastation of World War II. Like Vespa scooters, Lambretta scooters were inspired by the Cushman scooters, which came out of Nebraska, USA. In 1972 the Lambretta marque was purchased by the Indian government, which then created Scooters India Limited (SIL). Lambretta scooters were originally produced in Milan, Italy, but have since been buiit France, Germany, Taiwan and other countries.

Cushman
Cushman produced scooters from 1936 until 1965. Cushman scooters served as the inspiration for some of the most famous scooters in the world, such as Vespas. One of the more amazing scooters produced by Cushman was the model 53, which was designed to be dropped out of an airplane alongside paratroopers in order to provide them with transportation upon landing. Other interesting aspects of Cushman scooters include the forward twisting throttle grips and the advertised "penny-a-mile" operating cost of some of their models. Cushman replicas and restorations can still be found around the world.
